WASHINGTON – US Senator Charles Schumer Wednesday urged Treasury and Homeland Security officials to withdraw their October 2009 proposals that he said would significantly affect New York’s wine industry.

For the past few weeks I have been making the rounds of the wineries located in SouthCoast. I took it upon myself to accomplish the New Year's resolutions that I had suggested to Grape Expectation readers in the Dec. 31, 2009, column.
White Wine India Coastal Vineyards in South Dartmouth will be next on my list come spring when the tasting room is complete and they open to the public. I did meet owner David Nielson at the Boston Wine Expo last Sunday and was able to sample his Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer. I was impressed with what I tasted and I am looking forward to visiting the property. They currently are open for tours and tastings by appointment only. White Wine In India I learned a lot on my visits, but there are a few things that really made an impression on me. One is the consistent style of the wines that the Southeastern New England American Viticultural Area (AVA) produces. An AVA is a designated wine grape growing region that is distinguishable by geographic features and boundaries. AVAs are defined by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and in order to use an AVA on a wine label, the grapes have to be grown in that region. Although each wine I tasted had a unique flavor profile, the descriptors "clean, crisp, and refreshing" were always the words that first came to mind. Southeastern New England is no different than other wine areas around the world that have specific styles of wine associated with them.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - As a banker and financier, Lenny Recanati became a vintner for love not for money.
Indian Sauvignon Blanc "In order to go into the wine business, you have to have a passion for it. You have to have a love for it. Let's say there are better businesses to go into, more profitable, more lucrative. Easier ways to make money," said Recanati.
