Many horseback riders are feeling at home in Temecula Valley Wine Country, thanks to recent amenities such as installing hitching posts, discounts and setting aside areas for horse trailers.

JOHN BURGESS / The Press Democrat Tim Olson, co-owner of Olson Ogden Wines in Sebastopol, takes barrel samples while blending a new wine that will sell for less than $20. India Vineyard The North Coast wine industry, home to the highest concentration of high-end wineries and vineyards in the nation, is reeling from the impacts of a recession that has made it chic to drink cheap wine.

Four Seasons, the wine subsidiary of Vijay Mallya-owned United Spirits Ltd (USL), plans to foray into the wine tourism space by April-end, by setting up a hotel at its winery in Baramati, Maharashtra. The hotel will have 14 rooms, swimming pool, spa, restaurant, retail rooms where wine and other goods will be sold.
Vineyards India Abay Kewadkar, Director, Four Seasons Wines, says there is room for expansion of the facility based on initial consumer feedback to the initiative.
India Vineyard As a concept, wine tourism is not new in India, with players such as Sula, for instance, having boarding and lodging facilities at its winery in Nasik. Abroad, wine tourism is a big draw, with chateaus in France, for instance, actively promoted as places of stay. “As a promotion exercise, wine tourism works well for a winery,” explains Kewadkar. “There is so much you can do there and the word-of-mouth it generates is phenomenal.” But the USL subsidiary is not restricting itself to wine tourism alone in its bid to promote the beverage. There are exclusive wine bars, boutiques and taverns that the company intends launching over time.

Touring the vineyards in the Dassenburg mountains on horseback, with stops for little tastings, is the primary appeal of a stay at the Mont Rochelle estate, a large vineyard which also boasts a 16-room hotel with typical Cape Dutch architecture – thick white walls and a thatched roof. Some rooms have outdoor plunge pools as well as marble baths, the bar features dark wood, leather couches and fireplaces, and there's a fantastic restaurant, Mange Tout, where you can pair the estate's cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot with dishes such as springbok shank and oxtail cannelloni.
