March 8 (Bloomberg) -- In California’s Napa Valley, producer of the most expensive U.S. wines, 2010 may be a vintage year for foreclosures as the industry is squeezed by falling land values and a consumer shift to cheaper brands.
Shipping Wine To India As many as 10 wineries and vineyards in Napa will change hands in distressed sales or foreclosures this year and next, up from none in 2008, according to Silicon Valley Bank. In a bank survey of vintners, 7 percent called their finances “very weak” or “on life support.” “We have 250 vintner clients saying this downturn is the worst in 20 years,” Bill Stevens, manager of the bank’s wine division in St. Helena, California, said in an interview. “Anybody who was late to the party won’t have staying power.” Land values in Napa, home to about 400 producers, have fallen 15 percent from the 2007 peak, driven in part by slumping demand for high-end wine, said Robert Nicholson, principal at International Wine Associates, a consulting and financing firm in Healdsburg, California. The decline makes it harder for owners to refinance mortgages, especially if the property is worth less than the loan.
Cabernet Shiraz Napa winery and vineyard loan defaults rose fourfold to 18 in the year through January, according to San Diego-based research firm MDA DataQuick. In the survey by Silicon Valley Bank, whose clients are mostly high-end West Coast wineries, 71 percent of respondents said credit is harder to get.

Those growers and vintners, however, mostly favor varieties hailing from France and Italy, such as cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot and zinfandel.

Oregon takes a leap forward in wine-country touring Oregon has taken a big leap forward in creating the atmosphere and venues for good wine-country touring. In Yamhill County alone, new restaurants, hotels and tasting rooms are inviting enthusiasts.
Wines To India WINE-RELATED projects — be they vineyards, wineries or destination resorts — are long-term. Despite the economy, new wineries, restaurants and wine-country lodging continue to debut across the Northwest. On a recent trip through Yamhill County, I was startled at the changes — in the number of new wineries, the appearance of restaurants that can compete with Portland's best, and the debut of at least two destination hotels.
Grover Vineyards India Whether or not you love pinot noir, wine-country touring in Oregon is hard to beat. Early spring is an ideal time to visit, as you will avoid summer crowds and summer heat. Quake shakes Chile's wineries If there is any one blessing in a natural disaster the scope of the recent 8.8-magnitude earthquake just off the coast of Chile, it's that a remarkably small number of people - fewer than 1,000, it is hoped - died in the mammoth temblor, particularly when compared with the giant but smaller (7.0) quake that had devastated Haiti in January, where the toll was an estimated 230,000.
Wine Business In India By all accounts, Chile was spared a greater toll by a concentrated effort to build and enforce strong earthquake-resistant building codes since the 9.5-magnitude Valdivia 'quake there in 1960, which at the time was rated as the greatest earthquake ever recorded.
Wine Prices In India With gratitude that lives were spared, Chile nevertheless faces a massive economic impact from the 'quake. Its wine industry alone, a major player in the national economy - it ranks 10th in the world in overall production - may be heavily hit.
