April 17, 2010, 8:46AM Jim Trezise of the New York Wine and Grape Foundation reports more and more wineries are opening throughout New York.

Michael Maloney / The Chronicle Later hours are the norm at Peju Winery, one of only a few in Napa to stay open until 6 p.m. daily all year.
India Winery It is a frustrating aspect of wine tasting in Napa Valley: Too many tasting rooms are closed by 5 p.m.
Vineyards India This summer, however, a handful of wineries will change that, keeping tasting rooms open into the evening so that visitors can experience two of Wine Country's best features at once: great wine and glorious sunsets. Most begin new hours May 1, unless otherwise noted.
Addie Broyles expanded her cooking (and eating) skills on the West Coast and Spain before settling in Austin, mainly for the aguas frescas at the taco stand down the street from her house where she, husband Ian and son Julian are now attempting to grow their own food in the backyard.
Wine Society Of India Relishing food is about taking time to enjoy what has become the often hurried and mundane task of nourishing our bodies. Relish Austin is Addie's search for things that make her go "mmmm." High brow, low brow. Fast food, slow food. In Central Texas. On the Web. On the streets. In your garden and in your kids' lunch box. In your refrigerator and on your dinner table.
India Winery Relish Austin is also the name of Addie's print column that appears in the Austin American-Statesman a few times a month.
The freshness of spring is upon us with the blooming of springtime flowers, the budding of trees and that familiar smell of spring. On the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail in the heart of the Finger Lakes, new ideas are popping up everywhere. Last month we talked about Chef Sam's specialty cooking classes at Sheldrake Point and Simply Red Bistro starting on April 18. Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery at the Wine and Herb Festival will introduce its new copper oven that can bake a pizza in 90 seconds. More detailed information next month; I definitely plan to try one of these.
Wine To India New for Thirsty Owl Wine Co. is the addition to its tasting room. The construction features an additional tasting bar overlooking their cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, Syrah, and Malbec vineyard and has a commanding view of Cayuga Lake. The addition also has a small private tasting room with a balcony on the second floor to take in those breathtaking views of Cayuga Lake for miles looking east, north and south. Construction plans are anticipated to be completed by May 1.
Wine Society Of India Knapp Winery and Vineyard Restaurant was the first to win two double gold medals at the recent Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. The award-winning wines were their 2008 Vidal Blanc and their 2008 Estate Block 4 Vidal Ice Wine. I've had the pleasure of tasting both these wines and the fruity finishes are spectacular as if you plucked the grapes straight from the vine.
So much for aging. Sharrott Winery in Blue Anchor, Camden County, one of New Jersey’s youngest wineries, took home a double gold medal for its 2008 Cabernet Franc at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition this month, and earlier this year captured a gold for the same wine at the larger San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
Red Wine India Larry Sharrott Jr. and his son, Larry III, planted their first grapes in 2003 and opened the winery two years ago. The Sharrotts had been making wine at home for years, and after the elder Sharrot retired, they studied at the University of California at Davis, the nation’s top enology school, and drew up a business plan for their small winery. The climate in the Outer Coastal Plain, as the South Jersey viticultural area is designated, is similar to Bordeaux, with close to the same growing season lengths as Napa Valley, Larry Sharrott Jr. says.
Wine To India Their 2008 Cabernet Franc ($27.99, sharrottwinery.com ) is robust and fruity. At the Finger Lakes competition in Rochester, N.Y., they also won a gold medal for their Vignoles, a dessert wine similar to a lightly sweet Riesling, and at the 2009 competition, Sharrott’s 2008 Unoaked Chardonnay was named the top for that grape.
