i-List takes you to a different country each month. In May, we visit Macedonia focusing on changes shaping the country's economy, culture and its social fabric.
Wine Society Of India Demir Kapija, Macedonia -- Jordan Trajkov was a successful banker studying for an MBA when he visited Napa Valley in California.
India Winery The visit inspired him to go back to his roots and start a winery in his native Macedonia. Trajkov's father had owned a vineyard, but when Macedonia was part of socialist Yugoslavia he was not allowed to produce his own wine.
May 10 (Bloomberg) -- Alejandro Fernandez, one of Spain’svisionary winemakers, is serenading me with an old folk song inhis tasting room.
Wine To India It is 25 years since his Tinto Pesquera red gave Ribera delDuero a future as a serious wine region and he has openingbottles to prove it.
Wine Society Of India La Ribera, a high rocky plateau bordering the Duero river90 minutes’ drive northwest of Madrid, produces bold, savory,long-lived reds from the tempranillo grape with vivid fruit, dense structure and scents of leather and tobacco. Though hometo collectible Vega Sicilia, the region was little-known untilcritic Robert Parker called Pesquera “the Petrus of Spain’’ in1985, triggering a wave of interest.
Wine Notes by Heidi Cusick Dickerson "If any grape would be at home in the pose of the femme fatale -- smoke curling from its lips, long, irresistible legs crossed as another winemaker is sent to his doom -- it would be Pinot Noir," writes New York Times wine critic Eric Asimov in his foreword to "Passion for Pinot" by Jordan McKay.
Red Wine India If the implications in this quote pique your curiosity, Mendocino County's upcoming Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival next weekend May 14-16 has explanations. The Anderson Valley Winegrowers Association presents three days of Pinot immersion with 16 winery open houses, a couple of afternoon tastings, winemaker dinners and a technical conference all about Pinot Noir. One of the speakers at the conference is "Passion for Pinot" author McKay.
Wine To India As a Pinot Noir lover myself and as someone who worked at Handley Cellars, where one of Anderson Valley's famed Pinots is produced, I find Asimov's quote compelling and right on. There is a common perception that Pinot Noir is a sensual wine. It has a range of aromas from berries to beets, mushrooms to black olives. At its best it is full bodied, leaving delicate glass-hugging streams (known as "legs" in wine lingo) from swirling the wine in the wineglass. It goes with a wide range of food, from pasta with wild mushrooms to anything grilled.

The Spanish-style interior is charming and earthy, even elegant. But it's far from the lovely rolling hills and countryside of other area wineries, which attract well-heeled wine tasters to their peaceful surroundings.
Wines In India The question is: Can sophisticated wine lovers be counted on to venture into an area known for its great tacos, cheap car-repair shops and ramshackle houses to sip their favorite nectar? "I hope people come through the front door and are transformed," said Wornick, the winemaker for La Honda Winery and a part owner.
Red Wine India The winery sits in an old industrial building with a tin roof off Middlefield Road on the border of the North Fair Oaks neighborhood. Inside there's a cowboy-style handmade tasting bar from Mexico, a temperature-cooled room for aging wine in oak barrels, and lush color photos of the vineyards Wornick tends.
