By Michelle Locke(CP)– 4 hours ago HEALDSBURG, Calif. — They say great wine is made in the vineyard. Now some vintners are inviting guests to check that out through walking tours aimed at giving the real dirt on winemaking.
Red Wine In India "One of the challenges facing the industry is there is this elitist perception of wine," says Clay Mauritson, winemaker at Mauritson Winery, which offers vineyard tours. "I just see a huge benefit to getting people in the vineyard and showing them how the wine is made." The Mauritson tour is one of four self-guided walks put together with the assistance of the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission. (The other three are Paradise Ridge Winery, Balletto Vineyards and Matanzas Creek Winery.) The tours are free and visitors get information sheets pointing out various sights along the way; tasting room fees vary.
Wine From India Trails are clearly marked with stopping points to look at various features, such as the Mauritson wind machines used to protect grapes from frost during the winter. (The fans draw in and circulate warmer air.) Different types of vines are pointed out, as well as the environments they like to live in — heavier, richer soils for Sauvignon Blanc, for instance, or gravelly dirt for Cabernet Sauvignon.

India Vineyard The medium-dry, non-vintage Riesling Cuvee from Swedish Hill, a 24-year-old family business near the lake's western shore, beat out a record 850 wines to win the Governor's Cup silver chalice at the New York Wine & Food Classic.
Red Wine In India Sheldrake Point, launched in 1997 by Canadian native Bob Madill, won top-winery accolades for its 2007 Reserve Riesling, 2008 Gewurztraminer, 2008 Late-Harvest Riesling and 2009 Dry Riesling. Oklahoma vineyards are harvesting their grapes right now. Unfortunately, due to poor sales, some of the grapes will be left to rot on the vine. In fact, some vineyards actually stopped watering their grapes this summer.
Vineyards India In all, almost 50 tons of grapes will be wasted this year in Oklahoma according to News OK . The Oklahoma Grape Growers and Wine Makers Association says it is because many of Oklahoma’s wineries have resorted to buying bulk wine or grape juice concentrate from out of state. They simply bottle it in Oklahoma and sell it in the state.
India Vineyard It is unfortunate for the Oklahoma wine industry because it is actually cheaper to buy the wine from California rather than grow true Oklahoma grapes and produce true Oklahoma wine. There are actually enough grapes available to make true Oklahoma wine, but it is just more expensive.
