BRENTWOOD -- What's in a name? If you're a vintner in a region best known for corn, cherries and subdivisions, the wine-growing area found on labels of premium bottles is a lot like a Good Housekeeping seal of approval.
Wines From India After building up their reputation for the past decade, some East Contra Costa winemakers and grape growers, led by the Brentwood-based Hannah Nicole Vineyards, are seeking government approval to put a name of origin on their products.
Wine Club India "We feel that the most important piece of the puzzle for us to promote ourselves is to create a sense of place," said Hannah Nicole manager Mark Enlow, who is spearheading the newly formed Diablo Foothills Winegrowers Association. "One day people might say, 'I really like those Contra Costa wines.'" The allure of a location is crucial to selling wine -- it's why France honors famous areas like Montrachet by putting them on the label. In this country, the vintners tell consumers where their wine comes from using appellations, or American Viticultural Areas, which are regulated by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, a small agency within the U.S. Treasury Department.
