The South African wine industry willface a shortage of grapes within five years as growers reducethe acreage they cultivate, according to Distell Group Ltd. (DST) , thecountry’s biggest wine and liquor producer.
The Wine Society Of India The country’s industry has oversupplied the market, particularly with red grapes and wine, for the last five years, said Erhard Wolf, Distell’s general manager for grape and winesupply. During the peak of vineyard planting, a “veryoptimistic view” of potential markets was taken, resulting inmore vineyards being cultivated than were required, he said.
Wines From India “Vineyards are being removed and not renewed,” Wolf saidin a phone interview on May 13 from Stellenbosch, in SouthAfrica’s main wine region. “At this stage, even though we havea slight oversupply, in a period of five years we will probablybe going into a shortage of supply.” South Africa had 101,016 hectares (249,509 acres) ofvineyards in 2010, compared with 102,146 hectares in 2006,according to South African Wine Information Systems, whichrepresents all the country’s wine producers. Since 2005, thecountry’s industry has failed to replace about 5,000 hectares ofexisting vineyards annually, according to Sawis.

Pinot Noir, one of the most food friendly wines, has such an affinity with Mendocino County's Anderson Valley that the valley's grape growers have dedicated three days every May for the past 14 years to the grape, the wine and its nuanced, fragrant, robust or subtle, and tasty qualities. The Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival takes place May 20-22 and has become so popular that the grand tasting and some of the winemaker dinners are already sold out.
Wineries In India For those who like immersing themselves in the nitty gritty, the festival's technical conference, lunch and tasting on Friday still has space as do two of the winemaker dinners on the coast. For an informative and hospitable Sunday activity, the winery open houses are the best deal around. And some of the 25 participating wineries only open their homes and wineries on festival weekends.
The Wine Society Of India California. For those of us who manage to love both, the whole thing seems like nonsense. . . . That may be why I like the Pinot Noirs (and most of the other wines) of Anderson Valley in Northern California's Mendocino County. At their best, the wines balance elegance and a sense of place with rich and complex fruit, a satisfying reconciliation of the Old and New Worlds." France's Burgundy is also made from the Pinot Noir grape, which is why at some of the wineries you may find a Pinot Noir touting it was made in the "Burgundian" style. I've met several local winemakers who credit their love of the French Burgundies or a trip to Burgundy in southern France for their desire to make wine.
