Jim Mathews, Piney Woods Winery Vineyard Manager, looks over a plot of Muscadine grape vines, that are showing signs of lack of water due to the drought, in the yellowing and browning of the leaves. The plants are watered twice a day, but with the ground so dry, the total amount of the water does not always make it to the roots of the plants. Piney Woods Winery grows Muscadine grapes that require a lot of irrigation through the summer months. Small businesses are having a tough time weathering through the drought, some have said they've seen sales dip by half since a year ago. NAPA, Calif. (AP) — As the crisp bite of fall turns vineyards into a kaleidoscope of russet and orange, the Napa Valley's spooky side comes out to play with tales of mysterious noises and ghostly sightings.

Not a believer? Not a problem. Skeptics can enjoy the valley's real-life "ghost wineries," relics of the pre-Prohibition industry that are haunted by history if nothing else.

The Wine Society Of India

The term "ghost winery" refers to places that were started in the mid-to-late 19th century, a time when the California wine industry was booming, but were abandoned in the early 20th century. It was a crash brought about by the triple threat of an outbreak of the vine disease phylloxera, the Great Depression, and, of course, the failed experiment to ban alcohol that was analyzed in the recent PBS documentary "Prohibition" directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.

Despite the depressing rain, which has stalled the ripening ofthe red wine grapes throughout Napa Valley, vintners remaincautiously optimistic about the 2011 harvest. Most of thechardonnay and much of the zinfandel have been harvested, and withanticipated warm weather, ripening and harvesting will begin againthis week.

The following is the harvest report by American Viticultural Areas, from north to south: Calistoga — Paul Smith, Vermeil Wines at OnThEdgeWinery: Rain, rain, go away, come again in November ormaybe December. Last week’s rain dropped sugars and stalled trueripeness. More falling as I type means more anxious hand-wringingto the chorus “… you gotta know when to hold ’em, know when to fold’em …” With a couple lyric substitutions, “The Gambler” couldeasily be renamed “The Vintner.” Time for the voodoo, bovine horn, rabbit’s foot, crossed fingers, prayer, whatever it takes to nudgeLady Luck into dropping another dry, warm weather card or two intoour hand.

Howell Mountain — Pat Stotesbery, LaderaVineyards: “Rain, rain, go away” is the theme song.Between the drizzle, rain and cold, we have slipped back to lastyear’s pace. Some will start picking reds this week, even if justout of frustration so we might get our first peek at fruit quality.Everything looks good on the vines but time works against us. Andagain, tank space will probably be a challenge for many as harvestcompression looks more likely.

, hosted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The 2008 KB 308 Cabernet Sauvignon is made from grapes sourced from California and Washington, but the actual wine making took place in our backyard as the delicious juice sat in repose for 18 months in a combination of French and American oak.

With a bit of Petit Verdot and Syrah mixed in to add structure, color and complexity, KB 308 is gifted with aromas of woody chocolate and cherry and a spicy fruit-forward taste on the palate. After six years of production, the experts at Arrington have really found their groove with wines that measure up against some of the best wines produced east of the Mississippi. No longer dependent on sweet dessert wines or obscure varietals to impress, Arrington now goes boot to boot with other wineries with their big-bodied Cabernets, a fine Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah. They also have a Pinot Noir coming out for the first time that we're really looking forward to tasting.

Other Tennessee big winners in the competition include Stonehaus Winery, which won the Best of Sparkling with their 2010 Tickled Pink, and Century Farm Winery which took home the William O. Concordance, Gold and Silver awards went home with the above mentioned wineries as well as Hillside Winery, Tennessee Valley Winery, Keg Springs Winery, Beans Creek Winery, Sugarland Cellars, Mountain Valley Winery, Apple Barn Winery, Beachaven Vineyards and Winery, Old Millington Winery, Amber Falls Winery and Cellars, and Grinder's Switch Winery. I met the producers of Grinder's Switch last weekend at the Food Blogger Forum and really look forward to visiting their facility soon.
