Andy Perdue / Great Northwest Wine Maryhill Winery is in the Columbia Gorge near the town of Goldendale.
Cabernet Shiraz India Maryhill Winery owner Craig Leuthold has never been one to sit still, and now he has a new lineup of vineyard-designated wines that not only allow his Columbia Gorge winery to showcase a new reserve tasting room, but also some of his favorite vineyards.
Rosé India Late last year, Leuthold and his winemaker, Richard Batchelor, released nine wines they call “The Vineyards” — small-lot vineyard-designated wines that are available primarily to wine club members.

In fact, of the 27 wine grape varieties listed by the Virginia Wine Marketing Board on its VirginiaWine.org website, mourvèdre is not mentioned.
Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (dessert Wine) So the surprise at a recent tasting was not that a top rosé was being made in the state, but rather that it was 100 percent mourvèdre.
Cabernet Shiraz India Stinson Vineyards, a small Crozet-based vineyard, has produced a rosé with great aromas, primarily strawberry, and a fruity, complex mouth feel that lingers through a dry crisp finish. An easy drinker, this is one state rosé that should be on everyone’s shelf, especially during the warm-weather months.

Chenin Blanc Remember those high school days when you insisted on doing what the cool kids were doing even though you knew it was unwise, unflattering or just plain stupid? (For me it was the Farrah Fawcett ‘wings’ haircut—a dark time in my evolution.) Swimming against the mainstream takes grit and confidence, so I tip my hat to the team at Stony Hill winery. Over the past few decades it’s taken serious discipline and courage for Stony Hill to stick to crisp white varietals in Napa Valley’s red wine-soaked universe. But the team at Stony Hill Winery, despite the skeptics, has remained true to their Chablis-inspired philosophy since 1947. According to the winery owners, Willinda and Peter McCrea, “Our reputation is somewhat old fashioned in that we have stayed with the same wine style for so many years while the rest of the industry experimented. Partly this is the result of having only two winemakers in our 60 year history and part of it is staying true to our devoted customers who love our style, we need to keep them happy.” The winery began life as a 160-acre goat ranch on Spring Mountain when in 1943 when it fell into the loving hands of Fred and Eleanor McCrea. The couple planted exclusively Chardonnay vines in 1947, (even though locals advised against it, warning them of the public’s lack of interest in Chardonnay). Motivated by a desire to cultivate whites like the ones they loved from Burgundy, they forged ahead, believing their rocky plot to have Burgundian potential.
Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (dessert Wine) Today, with a mailing list of fans and numerous awards, they can be described as visionaries rather than outliers (we cannot say the same of my unfortunate flirtation with the Farrah Fawcett hairstyle). The team at Stony Hill is still family-run and the passion still rests with white varietals, although they do make a Cabernet Sauvignon and a red table blend. They specialize in crafting bright, crisp Chardonnay that pops with brilliant acidity and notes of melon and lemon cream. And, in keeping with their progressive white wine thinking, they cultivate Gewurztraminer, Semillon and Riesling, varietals that rarely command the kind of attention that a Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon might get. Doing what you love tends to lead to success, and that’s been the case with Stony Hill. A certain intrepid passion shows in these wines. They are universally mouth-watering and lovely, thanks to the special terroir that those visionary McCrea’s spotted many moons ago.

Sunset at Barboursville Vineyards, in Barboursville, Va. The wine business has helped reshape Virginia agriculture, creating opportunities in a state dominated by livestock and field crops.
Sauvignon Blanc ON a humid afternoon in late May, Luca Paschina, a winemaker born in northern Italy, made his pitch to the owner of a wine shop on Long Island. Pouring a cabernet franc reserve and a Bordeaux-style blend, he described how the red wines were aged for more than a year in French oak. And he recounted the history of Barboursville Vineyards, the 870-acre property in central Virginia where the wines were made.
Chenin Blanc For more than two decades, Mr. Paschina has been trying to make the case that Virginia wine deserves a place at the table with Barolo and Bordeaux. While his goal is to make Barboursville a world-class vineyard, he recognizes that it will have more success if Virginia is recognized as a world-class wine district. So he spends weekends pouring samples at wine festivals. He attends technical tastings to share ideas with winemakers. And he works with state officials to develop local marketing efforts and international trade missions.
