Although some may hate the winter weather and the cold temperatures, it is the season of frozen grapes and ice wine. While some wineries make a true ice wine using frozen grapes, others are making a variety of late harvest wines.
Wines Of India ICE WINE 21 Brix Owner Kris Kane explained the winery produces a true ice wine, Vidal Ice Wine. Grapes are left on the vines beyond the fall harvest to freeze. Nets are placed, once the leaves have fallen, on the grapes for protection from wind and birds.

Wine From India The price of a bottle of wine reflects a few things. First up are the costs of production, or how much it costs to make a bottle. There are the raw materials of grapes, barrels and bottles, plus utilities and labor. You also have to factor in administrative, sales and marketing costs. If the wine isn’t sold directly to a consumer, then distributors, wholesalers and retailers all look to make a profit on every bottle sold, so there are markups along the way. Buying a bottle of wine in a restaurant? Those are often the biggest markups. There is also the variable of Mother Nature—some vintages can vary dramatically in their yields, affecting the whole supply/demand factor, and some challenging vintages bring higher labor costs.
Wines Of India Expensive wines are usually expensive for two reasons. First off, expensive wines typically cost more to make. The raw materials can vary quite a bit in cost—a high-yielding grape from an unknown vineyard fermented in a stainless steel tank won’t cost as much to make as a wine made from a low-yielding, marquee vineyard, fermented in brand-new oak barrels by a highly sought-after winemaking consultant.

“It takes a lot of beer to make wine.” This is one of the first axioms I heard when I tried my hand at winemaking with my father-in-law, a proprietor of a local vineyard and winery, nearly a decade ago. Obviously the sentiment isn’t literal, and more than a little hyperbolic, but it does speak to the fact that artisan wine, beer, cider and distilled spirits are interconnected on several levels. Many of the basic processes of fermentation are similar, but there is also a kindred spirit when it comes to creating a unique and flavorful product out of raw ingredients, which are also often locally produced.
India Vineyard The Bluffs Vineyard and Winery, located about 10 miles west of Murphysboro on Illinois 3, can attest to this fact. Cheryl and Steve Ellis opened their winery in April 2010, but had been making wine and dreaming of a commercial winery since the mid-1990s.
Red Wine In India “My family has always made wine,” Steve explains, “and we enjoyed going to the few local wineries there were at the time. We just believed this was something we could do to contribute to the area.” Steve is a Murphysboro native, and Cheryl is from Jacob. So, regional appeal is at the heart of what the Ellises strive for — a fact that is not lost on visitors to their beautiful, spacious and friendly tasting room.
