It's been nearly 40 years since Steven Spurrier, a British wine merchant working in Paris, held a blind tasting between the top wines of California and their French counterparts. The "Judgment of Paris," as it became known, surprised many, as a clutch of Californian wines scored higher than examples from Bordeaux and Burgundy. Overnight the world woke up to what Californian winemakers had known all along: Their wines could stand alongside the very best.
Cabernet Shiraz In many ways the late 1970s were a turning point for California wines, as key figures like Robert Mondavi, Paul Draper of Ridge Vineyards, Chateau Montelena winemaker Mike Grgich, and Joe and Alice Heitz took an industry that had been best known for producing high-volume standard table wine and planted it firmly on the fine wine map.
Rosé But then something happened. In his book "The New California Wine," Jon Bonné argues that after the 1970s the state's wines began to evolve into a richer, riper style. What had originally impressed the judges in Paris—Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay made with an emphasis on structure, freshness and fruit—was sacrificed for a style that favored power and immediate impact.
If you’re looking for a different way to celebrate Mother’s Day this year, consider taking your mom wine tasting. There are several vineyards in and around the Richmond area, so you can drive your mother – or your aunt or your granny or any other significant mother-like figure – to one of them. (Or more than one, if you still feel guilty about that thing you did back in the day that she still doesn’t know about.) Driving your special lady to wine tastings could mean you’ll have to abstain from sampling, but that’s a small price to pay considering she was practically your chauffeur once upon a time.

The current format of Taste Washington is two days of identical tastings preceded by seminars in the morning. There are four seminars from which to choose each day. The seminars are for those wine enthusiasts who want more in-depth knowledge. Last year I attended one seminar which discussed one vineyard…its location, its dirt composition, which grapes grow best on the west-facing slope vs. the south-facing slope, its rainfall, its wind direction, etc. The vineyard manager then explained how various rows are trellised, canopied and pruned to the instructions of the various winery customers.
Wine Prices In India This year I chose blending with North Star Winery from Walla Walla. I have attended various blending events: two at Januik in Woodinville, one at Hogue Cellars in Prosser, one at Conn Creek in Napa and one at Rodney Strong Vineyards in Sonoma.
Wines To India All in all, blending is a humbling experience. The wine maker presents the same wines which he uses. Attendees are presented with a graduated cylinder and pipette. The assignment is to approximate the flavor of the winemaker’s wine by tasting the various blending wines.
