Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc is returning to its roots. Gone is the grape’s awkward stage, up through the 1970s, when oak flavors were used to mask unwanted herbaceous flavors. Gone is its chardonnay-wanna-be period of only a few short years ago, when the wines were rich and round with lots of toasty oak.
Red Wine India Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc has decided it is beautiful in its own skin. The grape, by its very nature, is refreshing and aromatic with citrus to stone fruit and tropical flavors. The wines are easy to sip and easy to match with many different foods. What’s not to love? In the last 10 years, sauvignon blanc plantings have increased by 26 percent in Napa County, while chardonnay is down 4 percent in that same period, according to Napa County crop reports. Consumers have weighed in on their desire for crisp, fresh fruit wines and more producers are getting serious about sauvignon blanc.
Wine To India Alan Viader of Viader Vineyards & Winery mentioned “the elegance and prettiness” of the wines, but also noticed that “some threw in the extra dimension that oak flavors provide.” Oak continues to be used in Napa Valley sauvignon blanc winemaking, with fermentation in neutral oak barrels and subtle oak flavors in several of the wines, yet not to the extent of previous years.

Happy Chardonnay Day! Yes, for pretty much any taste treat we have a specific day to celebrate it – National Mac and Cheese Day, National Hot Chocolate Day, National Bacon Day…but today is one of my favorites, because I do love a good, crisp glass of Chardonnay. I hear so many people tell me they don’t like Chardonnay, to then try a great one and realize how special this Burgundian varietal is….probably because Chardonnay of days past, often those from our beloved California, were heavy, buttery, oaky, and way too intense, or they were just flat, flabby and uninteresting. Lucky for us, those days have changed and Chardonnay wines of today are fantastic, lively any approachable, often being as budget friendly as they are palate friendly. Here are a few excellent selections, many very reasonably priced as well as delicious. A few selections were sent for editorial consideration.
Wine In India Liberty School Chardonnay from winemaker/owner Austin Hope, producing stellar, often sustainably grown wines in his Paso Robles winery. Liberty School is their entry level wine, but drinks like it is much more expensive. For years Austin and his father were growers for Charles Wagner and their Mer Soleil Chardonnay, now Austin uses much of this fruit for his Liberty School, producing elegant, crisp, balanced wine with notes for green apple, spiced pear and a touch of white flowers. $15, available at Goody-Goody Stores.
India Wines Another very affordable Chardonnay comes from Souverain using cool climate fruit from Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. The wine is a nice mix of both tropical fruit notes, mango and pineapple, with cream, ripe pear and citrus. An easy wine to enjoy with roasted chicken or pasta with a lemon cream sauce. $13 available at Spec’s.

It's been a banner week for the Arizona wine scene, with some national and international light shining upon our up and coming wine business. As first reported by the Australian liquor business blog The Shout , Pillsbury Wine Company has reached a preliminary distribution deal with Decante This, a small niche distributor down under.
Wines From India I recently caught up with Sam Pillsbury, founder and winemaker of Pillsbury Wine Company, to talk about the news.
India Wine He explained that the details of the deal are still being worked out, as far as which wines and how many cases will be imported but that he is very excited to work with Decante This. The distributor focuses on esoteric, out-of-the-way wines and Pillsbury really appreciates their approach to salesmanship. So, for now, Decante This will be working the market with samples of Pillsbury's wines to see which ones will sell before placing any orders.
