Wine To India —on a bluff overlooking one of the state’s oldest vineyards—hoping for momentum and success by association. Clearly the proximity to such historic vineyards worked because today they craft over 40 different varietals, pulling in fruit from several different Washington state AVA’s. The state’s wine business is certainly evolving as winemakers experiment with clones, varietals and what grapes work best and where. In an effort to highlight the diversity of Washington state’s terroir, Leuthold and his winemaker, Richard Batchelor, developed a winemaking portfolio that sources from nearly every major AVA in the state. Taking things a step further, Batchelor began the Vineyard Series, a line of single vineyard wines from the state’s most lauded vineyards.. Craig insists that the single most exciting thing about Washington state is value, noting that “Washington puts out the most affordable 90+ wines when compared to similarly scored wines from France, Italy, California and Oregon.” Below Leuthold shares his insights on what’s ahead for winemaking in the state.
Wine Society Of India What is most exciting in Washington wine right now? As a Washington state wine producer (and consumer) the two most exciting things, hands down, are the quality and diversity of the grapes being produced. Our latitude, climate and silt loam soils create a trifecta that make Washington well-suited to grow a wide variety of grapes. Plus, the vineyards are producing incredible quality and competing head-to-head with more established wine regions, and yet year-over-year, Washington puts out the most affordable 90+ wines, compared to France, Italy, California and Oregon.
Clearlake Oaks — The fifth Lake County Wine Competition took place last week at the impressive Brassfield Winery located above Clearlake Oaks.
Red Wine India Part Old West and part Mediterranean villa, Brassfield Winery offers a gorgeous setting, on the 2,500 acre property, at an elevation of 1,800 feet high, quite average by Lake County standards. We could step outside and see acres of healthy green vines, brown hills dotted with ancient oaks, bright blue skies and wispy white clouds.
Wine To India This year, Bob Fraser, the director of the San Francisco Wine Competition, took over the Lake County Wine Competition. Besides his years of experience with wine competitions, Fraser and his wife own a small vineyard in Lake County and he taught at Kelseyville High School years ago. “I’ve always had a passion for Lake County wines,” he said. “It’s been known for great sauvignon blancs but also fine Cabernets.” I was one of the 10 wine judges who were set up in two panels of five judges each to sample 150 Lake County wines. All wines were tasted blind.

for the Mail Tribune The 18 vineyards and wineries in the Applegate Valley, affiliated as the Applegate Valley Wine Trail, held their semi-annual "Uncorked" celebration on May 18. Along with the tastings of featured wines and complementary food pairings, the wineries also pulled out the stops — so to speak — and offered some interesting barrel tastings of bottles-to-come.
Wines In India These are wines that are still aging in the barrel. Some of the wines will be bottled in the next couple of months and released to the public soon after. Others will remain fermenting in oak for six months or longer before being bottled and allowed to age in the bottle for a few months to a few years prior to being offered for sale. These wines show nowhere near the flavor and complexity they will have when released, but a barrel sample gives a good idea of where they are going and what they will be like.
Red Wine India The winemakers, of course, taste from barrels at selected intervals during the winemaking process. These progressive samplings show how a barrel's contents — whether a single grape variety from a particular vineyard, a blend of the same grape variety from different vineyards or a blend of different grape varieties — is developing.
