Michael: I grew up in the wine country of Napa and Sonoma counties of California. That's where I acquired the “habit.” I began picking grapes when I was about eight years of age in one of the vineyards in northern Napa County, and also in southern Lake County near Middletown. As I got older, I was able to work the harvest. Kids were actually let out of school for some of the harvests because sometimes the Braceros laborers from Mexico didn't make it there in time and the growers were short handed. Later on, I was able to pick up summer jobs working the vineyards and wineries in the Windsor and Sebastapol area. So that's the imprint for me.
Wine From India Michael: Having been around wineries, wine making and some of the best grapes on the planet, I figured I owed it to myself to try making my own. I probably made my first wines when I was away at college in Sacramento. When I moved to Reno in the early '70s, I got more active about making my own wine. I even took a jab at making brandy.
Wines Of India Michael: I was so young when I began working in the vineyard that it seemed more like torture than wonderful. There were snakes in the vines. There were spiders as big as my hand. Wasps, sticky stuff, and I only got 10-cents per tub. Later, when I was able to work with the pruning crews, I gained more of an appreciation for what the grape vine is, and how the care with the pruning produced a direct effect on the quality of the grapes and therefore the wine. Now I view the vineyard work as the key ingredient in the making of the wine. This is a complete reversal of my early disposition.

Part of Early Mountain’s 305 acres include a picnic area behind the tasting room where guests can congregate to enjoy nice weather, drink wine and bring outside food to munch on. When weather-appropriate, Early Mountain will light the fire pits creating a sort of camp-style outdoors lounging area which is pet-friendly.
India Vineyard Nested at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains on Rt. 230 is Early Mountain Vineyards. A destination for both local and out of town visitors, the vineyard and winery is all about celebrating Virginia wine.
Red Wine In India The success of wine in the region is what prompted owner Jean Case and her husband Steve to purchase Early Mountain from the Sweeley family in November 2011. The vineyard and winery opened in 2012 and since then has typically produced a portfolio of six or seven core wines and also usually features six to eight wines from other Virginia wineries. The vineyard and winery is set on 305 acres on Route 230 right off of Route 29 south and 27 of those acres are used for growing 10 different types of grapes.

Formed by the dramatic action of retreating glaciers about 10,000 years ago, the Finger Lakes, with their spectacular gorges and waterfalls, take visitors on a walk through geological time. Despite their proximity and great natural beauty, they somehow seem to remain one of New York State's best-kept secrets. Increasingly, visitors are seeking them out for the wine country here and the buzz it is generating.
India Winery Driving the length of Seneca or Keuka lakes, the vineyards slope down towards the lakes and evoke vistas reminiscent of Germany's Rhine Valley. With a climate that is similar to the Rhine region, it is no surprise that Riesling is the prime grape here. The Rieslings here have astounding breadth, ranging from the mineralic to the unabashedly floral and perfumed.
Vineyards India But if Riesling is the only grape you think of when you hear about the Finger Lakes wine country, it's time for a rethink. Winemakers here are making some exceptional, peppery Syrah, woody Pinot, award-winning Cabernet Franc and spicy Lamberger (made from the Austrian grape also known as Blaufränkisch).
