, and not a wine expert , and nowhere does this distinction apply with the greatest force than when it comes to Burgundy. I love it. I fear it. The province produces perhaps the finest wines in the world, in the crisp white wines of Chablis, or the great Grand Crus vineyards of the Cote d’Or. This is the native land of pinot noir, and certainly the grape finds its noblest expression here.
Sauvignon Blanc But to give you a sense of how much expertise one would need to be pro, my wine atlas devotes 25 pages to the region, with maps so detailed that you can see the barns and the side streets. This is further complicated by accidents of history. Burgundy was once the richest part of rural France, and its landholders — the church in particular — so irritated Napoleon that he broke up large landholdings, and so the average landholding now is 15 acres. It is not unusual, in fact, for a grower to have parcels in two or three different vineyards. There are over 100 Appellations Controlee, some of them no bigger than a tiny village. There are great variations in soil, which makes the difference between a truly great vineyard and an average one. “The fragmentation of Burgundy is the cause of the greatest single great drawback of its wine: its unpredictability,” my atlas cautions, before plunging in for pages and pages of mind-crushing detail.
Chenin Blanc On top of that, these wines are not cheap, and even at the low end they are more than you’d typically pay for pizza wine. Then there are the hierarchies of vineyards, Grand Crus are the best, Premier Crus have been singled out but are a step down, and so on. You might think to yourself: why bother? And the reason that you bother now and then is this: “Strawberry, wild pink roses, ephemera, hints of pepper, fresh cream, redolent of spring, savory hints of sage and rosemary” — and then language begins to fail. This was my experience with the 2010 Paul Garaudet, Cuvee Paul, Monthelie ($33). Monthelie is one of the appellations in the Cote d’Or, between Dijon and Lyon if you were traveling by car. I was amazed at how it pulled my focus so deeply into its layers and then disappeared, like the feeling of falling in love with a stranger for a moment who appears in the window of a train. I know, I know, but this is what I’m talking about. Burgundy does this. And by the way, I had a glass of my usual house Rioja afterward and found it so crass that I couldn’t finish it. So this will steal your heart when it works.
