Paul Gordon likes to go online to check the temperatures in Ampuis, France. He finds that they are remarkably similar to the readings at his perch high in the Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino County. That's a promising sign: Ampuis is the main town in the northern Rhone appellation of Cote-Rotie, renowned for its syrah-based wines, and Gordon and his partner, Jackie Bracey, are the proprietors of Halcon, which produces elegant, savory syrah and other Rhone-style wines.
Indian Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (dessert Wine) High tech brought Gordon in 1989 to California, where he met Bracey. Gordon is the chief technology officer for Blink, which makes charging systems for electric cars, and Bracey works for a real estate company. During the week, they live in Sunnyvale, but every weekend, they head for their 25-foot travel trailer parked next to the Halcon vineyard.
White Wine India Gordon had gotten interested in wine and particularly liked the bottles he tried from Anderson Valley, an appellation near their property that is known for pinot noir. Gordon talked to winemakers and real estate agents and found several properties for sale. "There were a couple of places where I thought we could produce good pinot," he says.

Simply Red #3 is the writer's favorite, but several other reds and whites make a solid impression.

Twenty-nine homes have been confirmed lost in an immense wildfire in southeastern British Columbia several days after the blaze sparked and forced hundreds to flee.
Indian Sauvignon Blanc Alan Stanley of the Kootenay Boundary Regional District said everyone is hopeful that no more homes will be lost to the 37-square-kilometre Rock Creek fire. The B.C. Wildfire Service hasn't forecast wind for Sunday, but he warned that situation could change quickly.
Indian Chenin Blanc "You can't guarantee anything with a wildfire," Stanley said. "It is bold, all-caps 'unpredictable' with several exclamation marks." The aggressive blaze forced campers at the Kettle River Provincial Park to rush out on foot last week with little more than the clothes on their backs, leaving nearly everything behind including vehicles and trailers, said Stanley. Groups of about 10 to 15 campers would be allowed back starting at noon on Sunday.

Vin de Pays Gascogne Gros Manseng Sauvignon Blanc, France 2014 (£7.99) If there were any sense to wine fashion, the eclectic collection of white grape varieties planted in south-west France would be far better known. I’ve never understood why more growers haven’t taken to gros manseng, the senior partner in this brilliant blend from Gascony, in the way they have to the supporting player, sauvignon blanc. Maybe it’s just too distinctive, with its ability to summon up mango and pineapple, cut with pink grapefruit. Or maybe it’s the name. Either way, its lack of renown makes for a bargain, with the sauvignon adding its usual leafy lift.
Indian Rosé The mansengs are also renowned for making some of the world’s finest sweet wines in Jurançon. The taste of candied and honeyed tropical fruit combines with grapefruit marmalade in a graceful 100% petit manseng such as Charles Hours Uroulat Moelleux Jurançon 2013 (£12.60, 37.5cl, oxfordwine.co.uk ). The two mansengs are also found in Producteurs Plaimont’s dessert wine Saint Albert Pacherenc du Vic Bilh 2011 (£14.26, 37.5cl, Corney & Barrow ), while petit manseng joins petit corbu for the mineral white from Alain Brumont’s Bouscassé.

Indian Rosé Trisaetum has three estate vineyards, which are dry farmed, meaning the berries grow without irrigation. "It works very well even in our warmer vintage like this," says Frey. "We are still seeing the vines have a lot of strength to ripen this fruit." The fruit is processed at the winery on the 17-acre Ribbon Ridge estate. Trisaetum produces about ten Pinot Noirs a year, but also focuses on Riesling.
