WHEN cellarmasters in the 1980s spoke of themselves as "wine growers" rather than "wine makers", there seemed a refreshing modesty to their "wines are grown not made" mantra. It was easy to slip into the trap of assuming they were little more than midwives, pulling out the baby at due date, but entirely detached from it’s DNA.
Late Harvest Chenin Blanc (dessert Wine) India Noninterventionist wine-making is largely a fiction: someone must decide when to harvest, when to crush, when to draw the wine off the skins, in what receptacles and for how long to age it, when to bottle it and how to package it.
Indian Cabernet Shiraz But if you take a step back, when the vineyard was laid out someone had to decide what varieties and clones to plant, what rootstocks to use, how to prepare the soil, whether to trellis and what pruning system to apply. Often, these decisions are made by grape growers without even a thought about the wine that may eventually be produced.
At the Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition, 20 judges worked in groups of four to work through the 561 wines entered from throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Chenin Blanc India To win a gold, a wine must earn a top score from three of the four judges. If all four judges deem the wine a gold medal, then it wins a unanimous double gold.

Unless you’re involved in the wine industry, why should you care about Appellation St. Helena (ASH)? That’s one of the questions we posed to three representatives of ASH last week: ASH Chair Dave Yewell, Seth Goldfarb of Anomaly Vineyards and Leslie Russell of St. Helena Winery. Here are some of the answers we came up with.
Rosé India First, we are all involved in the wine industry, even if indirectly. Grapegrowers and vintners pay a huge share of our property taxes, and the tourism they attract drives our local economy.
Sauvignon Blanc India The 10-year-old ASH fuels that success by hosting an annual tasting of St. Helena wines for members of the wine trade during Premiere Napa Valley, and by hosting bASH, an annual food-and-wine pairing competition where ASH wineries team up with local restaurants and students at the Culinary Institute of America.
