Cabernet Shiraz . The Peter Zemmer 2014 Pinot Grigio has is a bit of effervescence but on the whole this wine from the Italian Alps is one of the better Pinot Grigios. There is a freshness and quality to this wine that is not typical of this varietal. Perhaps it is due to the elevation. Overall one finds lemon, lime, peach and pear on the palate.
Rosé 2014 is quite impressive. Rutini’s roots are in Italy but relocating to Mendoza Argentina the family became one of the forerunners in the wine industry after establishing the winery in 1885. With subtle nuances this wine is not overly citrusy or grassy like some of its competitors. This is partially due to the fact that the wine is aged in 50% new oak and 50% 2-3 years old oak barrels. This is not typical of Sauvignon Blanc as most are aged in stainless steel. The wine has crisp bright aromas that have mild hints of grass and flavors of peach, citrus and white flower. The oak imparts more viscosity, texture and depth into the wine. There is a quality very much in style like Viognier that makes this wine outstanding.
A recent wine tasting in the remodeled Joseph Phelps Vineyards was a bit of the old and a bit of the new.
Grover Vineyards India The old was a story that wine educator Geraldine Seltzer told about two Joes: Phelps and Heitz when Phelps finished building his winery in 1974. Heitz brought a 110-year-old bottle of Madera to christen the new building and proceeded to pour it on the floor.
Shipping Wine To India When Phelps complained, Heitz assured him that not all of it ended up on the floor and the two men ended up drinking the rest. The two Joes were neighbors. Heitz bought 160 acres in Spring Valley in 1964, nine years before Phelps bought 600 acres — an old cattle ranch, also in Spring Valley.
